Thoughts To Ponder for 2014

Live in the Present

 "What's past is prologue."- Shakespeare

" I said there was but one solitary thing about the past worth remembering and that was the fact that it is the past."- Mark Twain

Past is to relive the "good old days"- or looking back and constantly thought about what could have been, When attention constantly fixated on the past or worrying about the future that much less energy is available for us to use in the here and now, can sap us of the full power we need to carry out our life's mission, as a result we may become preoccupied, unfocused, even chronically tired or depressed. Another factor that can keep us from concentrating fully on the present is that we may have literally lift a part of ourselves somewhere else. this could be the result of traumatic experience or abuse. But when we dont pick up the pieces and move on, It is as if a part of our soul is missing in action, harboring anger or resentment or not forgiving another - or ourselves- also prevents us from living in the present. Sometimes the most important person you have to forgive is yourself. We can certainly learn from our yesterday, but it is dangerous to live in the past.

Life's purpose and mission
by  Rannie Bernardo on Tuesday, March 31, 2009 at 11:18pm ·

"The purpose of life is to find God- in yourself, in your talents, in your calling and in your sacred labor."- El Morya

" Everyone should carefully observe which way his heart draws him and then choose that way with all his might. You will know your passion because it makes your heart sing. It is the thing that gets you out of the bed in the morning. When you talk about it, you become spirited, alive, energized.."- Hasidic saying

"Whatever you think, be sure it is what you think....another principle to remember is that your mission is not necessarily equal to your job, It's wonderful if you are able to mold your passion into a career, but your mission doesnt have to be what you do for a living, It may be something you do after work hours, like composing music or working with disadvantage children or taking care of the animals. In fact, your mission may not be what you do at all , but WHAT YOU ARE. So that your very life is an example to others. For example Mother Theresa's calling was to serve the poorest of the poor while living among them, but it was more than that, her mission was to love in action. " We have to bring God's love to the people by our service " Mother Theresa once said, " We do no great things , only small things with great love."

Happy New Year ! May you welcome 2014 with Love, Prosperity, Peace and Happiness!

It was always my pleasure to be with these friends (kindred spirits) whenever had the chance and doing things we all love to do, meditate and talk about spirituality. I don't mind the more than three hours of traffic I endured going to Jupiter St., Makati for this is a chance for a small get together, lately we are busy and never had a chance to catch up, now is the time and opportunity. We do a light meditation to bless and heal our Mother Earth specially those affected by Typhoon Yolanda, those who need healing, family and love ones, It was a quiet, simple and yet powerful way to help by radiating our light and best thoughtforms, the simple ceremony and ritual was conducted by Kanchan.

Macrobiotic Exercise: Stretching, An Essential Exercise

9 joints exercise with Ms. Riza Regis
Stretching is a vital form of  exercise that we neglect to do, but in some Asian traditions it is a stress buster and a form of relaxation and exercise in itself, you noticed work fatigue could be relieved by simple stretching, we tend to stretch during long flights when we travel, that is a voluntary mechanism of our body to cope up with fatigue and stress.

During my Elementary and High School days, after our usual flag ceremony in the morning we have stretching exercise before the start of the class, but not in College there is no such thing, even after college and working years we forget about stretching and the essence of stretching in our daily life and our health.

In sports, like swimming, badminton, running or jogging, they always teach to do stretching exercise first to lessen the injury from strenuous or intensive exercise or sports routines.

The west should learn exercise from the east, in western way, running, jogging, gym work out, weight lifting are all prone or susceptible to muscle, tendons, ligaments, bones and joints injuries compared to Eastern practices such as Tai-Chi, Qi-Kung and Wushu, I had tried this and I must say that with a few minutes of practicing simple movements, you get all sweat same as you went to the gym for hours, so it is not all about how strenuous our routines are, but doing the right movements.

Below is an example of a Japanese movement/exercise from Macrobiotic teachings by Michio Kushi, hope you find it helpful .

MERIDIAN STRETCHES

In a book by Michio Kushi on Macrobiotic Way, the joy of exercise, he describe and explained some stretches that stimulates our meridian points, it is like having yoga and reflexology at the same time using the stretching, I took a self-made photos to illustrate this form of stretching.

The following exercises routine will take between twenty and forty minutes to perform depending upon your energy level and desire. Its primary emphasis is upon the system of meridians described by modern acupuncture theory. There are fourteen meridians (lines of energy flow) which run up and down the body, extending to both internal organs and external body parts, including the toes, hands, face and scalp. According to Oriental medicine, if the electromagnetic energy flow through the meridians is harmonious and free, the person is healthy. The meridian stretches help re-establish and maintain a balanced energy flow. While performing the routine, imagine clear and unblocked energy flowing through each meridian. Such positive mental focus will enhance the effectiveness of the stretches.

Use the routine once a day, in the morning or evening, or whenever you can find the time. Keep in mind that it is better to do the exercise every other day than it is to miss several days in a row. When exercising, hold each of a positions at their point of extension for one full breath, then revert to the original position, and rest for about thirty seconds before moving onto the next stretching movement. Also, in all of the movements, bend from the waist rather than from your upper back. the point of extension will be different from each person; the distance you can stretch is not nearly so important as performing the exercise with correct form. When you complete the exercise , be sure to pause for the full minute before moving on to the next exercise. in a twenty minute routine, this will cut the actual exercise time to about fifteen minutes-with five minutes of rest to allow your body to prepare for the next exercise.

TRUNK BEND:
This exercise stimulates the lung and large intestine meridians, which run along the outside of the arm and hand.

Standing, with your feet shoulders' width apart, clasp your hands behind your back. Slowly bend forward, raising your arms behind you keeping the hands clasped. Bend from the waist as far forward and as far down possible, extending the hands beyond the line of the head. Take a full breath and slowly return to the original standing position. pause briefly and repeat the movement, a dozen times in all. rest for a minute and move to the next exercise.

ALTERNATE LEG STRETCH:
This exercise stimulates the liver and gall bladder meridians . The liver meridians runs along the inside of the leg to the torso. The gall bladder meridian passes along the leg, over the torso, under the arm from front to back, and over the shoulder, extending up to the temple.

Sit with both legs extended in front of you, opened as widely as possible. reach froward with both arms extended toward your right foot, making sure the knees are locked with the backs of the legs close to or touching the floor, bend the entire trunk of your body from the waist, letting your head drop as you stretch. When you reach the point of extension take a full breath. Slowly return to the original sitting position. Turn and repeat the same movement toward the opposite leg. pause for a breath before repeating. keep alternating until you have stretched in each direction six times. Stand and rest for a minute and move on to the next exercise.

FRONT BODY STRETCH:
This exercise stimulates the stomach meridian and the spleen-pancreas meridian. The stomach meridian runs up the front of the legs, across the torso, ending on the face, and the spleen/pancreas meridian runs up the inside of the leg and over the chest, ending under the arm.

Sit on the floor with your both legs folded to the sides . Slowly and carefully  bend backwards, lowering your shoulders and back to the floor. If this is too difficult, fold your arms behind and underneath for support. With shoulders and back to the floor, extend both arms above the head. In the extended posture take seven full breaths while concentrating on the energy flow through the meridians. return to a standing position and rest for one minute before moving to the next exercise. eventually you will become able to do this stretch without your arms for support .

DOUBLE LEG STRETCH
This exercise stimulates the kidney and bladder meridians. the kidney meridian runs up the back of the leg and around the body, ending on the chest. the bladder meridian runs down the back of the torso and leg.

Sit on the floor with your legs together and extended straight in front of you. bending forward from the waist, reach with your hands towards the toes of both feet. Make sure your knees remain locked and the back of your legs rest against the floor. At the point of extension, take one full breath and slowly return to the original sitting position. pause briefly and repeat until you have performed a dozen stretches. Stand and rest for a minute before going to the next exercise.

OPEN LEG BEND
This exercise stimulates the heart and small intestine meridians. The heart meridian runs up the arm, ending under armpit, and the small intestine meridian runs up the back of the arm, ending on the face.

Sit on the floor with your legs open in front of you, soles of the feet together, and knees wide apart. Holding your toes with both hands, slowly bend forward from the waist, bringing your nose toward the arches of the feet. At the point of extension, take a full breath and return to the original sitting position. pause briefly and repeat until you performed a dozen bends. Stand and rest for a minute before moving to the next exercise.

CROSSOVER BEND
This exercise stimulates the two comprehensive circulatory meridians, which are known as the triple heater (TH) and the governing vessel (GV). The TH runs along the middle of the inside and outside of the arm; the GV passes up and down the front and back of the torso from the groin to the buttocks.

Sit on the floor with your ankles crossed close to the body and knees wide apart. Also cross your arms in front so that the right hand grasp the left knee, and the left hand the right knee. Now bend forward from the waist as far as you can, trying to touch your forehead to the floor in front of you. At the point of extension, take a full breath and return to the original cross-legged sitting position. Pause briefly and repeat until you performed twelve stretches. Stand and rest for a minute before going to the side stretch.

SIDE STRETCH
This exercise stimulates many of the meridians simultaneously.

Starting position
Extension

Twisting
Stand with feet at the width of one and a half shoulders apart, hands extended straight above your head, and thumbs (but not hands) clasped together. bend from the waist to the right side until your trunk and arms are at a ninety-degree angle to the floor. At the point of extension, twist your trunk so that you are now looking towards the ground, keeping thumbs clasped and arms extended outward as far as possible. Hold the position for a full breath. Rotate the trunk again, slowly returning to the original position. Pause and repeat the exercises to the left side, and then alternate right and left sides until you have performed the movement six times on each side.

It is best combine these "stretchings" with walking or the nine joints exercise (an exercise where you move, stretch and flex all the joints in the body)  to complete your exercise routine, follow this simple steps in walking exercises:

Sweetness of Being Solitude

A temple visit in Bangkok, Thailand

100_5472This year to be different, I spend Christmas and New Year with myself , stay away from food and the holiday binge, social activities and do more cleansing, meditation, communing with nature and myself, re-examined my life and reflecting on my experiences, writing on my gratitude journal, blogging, being with myself is like being at the center, being with my creator and I am the happiest. Being Solitude can be Healthy and Happy, it is part of my emotional cleansing process.

100_6299This is the best Christmas gift and favor I can give myself so far, I am blessed as everyone else, I am cleansed, purified and healed of all excess baggage, I think wisely and ready to face the world and new year again with new hope and renewed spirit, drawing inspirations from God.

The year 2012 has many "highs and lows" , but God is good always providing and caring, "changing the pattern" as I call it and walk a different path, spring cleaning my house and emotions, re-arrange and organize things. I am grateful to find activities that I really love to do, meet interesting people and found a Life coach , spiritual advisers in so many people I've met along the way of this so-called life, wonderful fraternal brothers and sisters to cheer me up, for a family who are more caring, loving and blessed, dear and real friends to give me an honest to goodness advice and a lot of good people and kindred spirits who inspire me and bring out the best in me, trusted me and believed in me.

100_5532

In this time of the year also many speculations about "doomsday" or mayan predictions that people have culture of fear and of what will be next, but if ever there such a thing as doomsday, I have no worries, no fears because I believed I lived a full life, I have done good enough, I have what I want spiritually, God knows what is inside of me and what I have done for others and my sacred labor. I will let go and let God always and ready.
100_5352This year life lessons, to let go, let God, forgive and acceptance. Just as Saint Francis prayer "serenity to accept the things I can not change and the wisdom to know the difference." Last year is not much of financial gains, but I wasn't complaining , I have travelled a lot and enjoy my remaining youth, always thankful that I am alive and well. I learned so much about life than making a living. I know 2013 is a year of opportunity and manifestations, may the good Lord, shower me, my family and love ones, relatives, friends with more blessings of good health, good fortune, material and spiritual prosperity. Happy 2013!

The Joy of Organic Farming

When we say Organic farming, it is farming without the use of pesticides, chemical fertilizers and GMO seeds. I love to have  my own farm someday and still dreaming of it, I will make a compost that we used to do and learned from High School, I will plant vegetables and medicinal herbs  that we usually do during elementary days in practical education, in Bulacan, PH.

I will plant only non-GMO crops and the best variety of trees and plants, all edible and fruit bearing, they say If only Filipinos know how to plant, there will be no hunger in the country because Philippines has a very rich soil, anything you throw on it, it will grow, not only that we are very rich in indigenous medicinal herbs and vegetables, we have so many edible plants that some of us doesn't even know! I learned during a farm visits and tours so many things about our indigenous herbs and vegetables, feels like going back to my Botany class in College, by planting trees we protect the environment, we purify the air and environment by producing our own crops and vegetables we fight hunger and malnutrition, no one will be hungry and malnourished anymore, only healthy, nourished, vibrant, intelligent and strong Filipinos.

There is no reason not to plant because you don't have a piece of land. I will show you how my brother-in-law and sister grew a farm in their rooftop, all organically grown plants using organic fertilizers and non-gmo and indigenous crops, like pandan, lemongrass, turmeric, ginger, calamansi, malunggay, papaya, eggplant, tomotaoes, patola, ampalaya, chickens, spices like chili, sage, rosemary, basil and so on..I posted some pictures to share and this is one of the area I love to stay when visiting her home, I called it farmville on the roof:

Grapes
Calamansi

Native chickens are raised under the roof, eggs harvested fertilized, not hormone induced, next is the turmeric plant, easily grow and still harvest root crops even potted. Who could imagine they can grow a grapevine that stand the test of summer heat in the rooftop and look bear fruits too.

Pandan (great for cooking rice), onion chives, papaya, calamansi (PH lemon), lemongrass or tanglad, malunggay, eggplant, bell peppers and tomatoes and different herbs such as basil, rosemary and mint etc.

Lemongrass
Papaya

I learned much in organic farming, sustainable agriculture and eco-waste management during Farm visits, one of them is the Flor's Garden in Antipolo, Rizal. Ms. Flor is a retired bank executive and used a vast land inherited from parents into an organic farm sanctuary, she is a jolly, young looking for her age and very practical woman and have passion for organic farming, sustainable agriculture, eco-waste management and natural health , I will share some pictures I took during a visit to her farm:

We are served fresh organic vegetables and edible flowers salad as appetizer, noticed the oregano plant in the table setting, it serves a purpose to drive away mosquitos and other insects such as flies.

The infinity pool is made of fresh water from a natural spring, non-treated, no chlorine and free flowing. Ms. Flor gave us a lecture on eco-waste management such as using garbage (like eggshells) as fertilizers, she even collected garbages from restaurants and converted it into organic fertilizers. She only serves fresh fish, meats, juices and vegetables from her own farm that is organically grown, Everything is fresh, the freshly squeezed balimbing juice is a hit as a refreshment. She also talk of medicinal properties of our indigenous herbs and plants.

Her chickens are free-range native organically grown, fed with chopped vegetables and whole grains, no hormones and antibiotics or synthetic vitamins. Noticed also recycled old CD's hanging in her garden, it is not a decorative pieces but to drive away insects and pests, she doesn't use pesticides and chemical fertilizers, she makes her own fertilizers (compost).

She only has native pigs, organically grown as well, raised in a no smell pens, she used charcoal and coconut husk underneath the pen to make it "no smell".

A health farm in San Mateo Rizal also has his own farm and sanctuary, pictures was on old one and during the time the farm is still  work in progress, it is now a beautiful, Bali style spa, organic farm,  and retreat farm.

The water from the farm is also natural free flowing spring water, where tilapia raised organically by feeding only Azola (Mosquito fern) and duckweed,  many medicinal herbs and indigenous plants were also planted.

Native Nipa huts serves as guest rooms and spa, nipa huts are the natural and native habitat of Filipinos.

Hope to visit more exciting farms, truly an enjoyable and educational experience, much more If we could have our own. Enjoy farming!
